A relaxed 40-person celebration, golden light through the trees, and a cozy finish at Sabine in Ballard
Hannah and Justin’s Ballard Locks wedding in Seattle was intimate, relaxed, and very Seattle in the best way. They had about 40 guests, a first look in the gardens, family and wedding party photos around the property, an outdoor ceremony at the Locks, golden hour portraits, and a cozy reception at Sabine in Ballard.
The Ballard Locks, officially the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, are one of the best Seattle locations for a smaller wedding if you want greenery, paths, trees, water nearby, and a setting that feels tucked away without leaving the city. The grounds are public, so a wedding here takes a little more planning than a private venue, but the tradeoff is a location that feels calm, scenic, and very specific to Seattle.
For Hannah and Justin, the day worked because it stayed simple. We kept the photography focused on the people, the light, the gardens, the ceremony, and the walk over to Sabine afterward. Nothing felt overproduced, and that fit them perfectly.

Planning a Wedding at the Ballard Locks?
The Ballard Locks can work really well for intimate weddings, elopements, and smaller ceremonies in Seattle, especially if you want a garden setting without booking a traditional wedding venue. The paths, trees, lawns, stonework, and water nearby give you a lot of variety for portraits without needing to drive anywhere else.
The biggest thing to remember is that the Locks are a public space. The official name is the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, and the grounds are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Weddings and reserved spaces generally require a permit, and the Carl S. English Garden has reservable spaces for approved activities up to 50 people. Personal/non-commercial photography under 30 people may not require a permit, but a wedding ceremony is different and should be checked ahead of time.
For photography, I’d keep the timeline simple. Do the first look, family photos, wedding party photos, ceremony, and portraits all at the Locks, then move to Ballard Ave or a nearby reception space like Sabine if you want dinner or cocktails afterward.
First Look in the Ballard Locks Gardens
We started the day with a first look in a small tucked-away outcropping area at the Ballard Locks. It was quiet, green, and honestly adorable.
Justin’s reaction was so cute! Full of laughs, full of admiration, and completely locked in on Hannah. This is one of the reasons I always recommend a first look for couples who want a relaxed day. It gives you a calm moment together before guests, before timelines, before everything starts moving.
Right after, we rolled straight into family photos and a few portraits.
Golden Hour Wedding Portraits at the Ballard Locks
The light showed up in a big way.
We had sunlight blasting through the trees, creating this golden-green glow that felt soft, warm, and very “Pacific Northwest.” It’s the kind of light that makes portraits feel effortless, even when you’re doing them quickly.
We kept everything simple and natural. Hannah and Justin didn’t want anything overly posed. Their whole vibe was relaxed and easy, so I photographed it that way.
Intimate Wedding Ceremony at the Ballard Locks
Their ceremony was also at the Locks, and it matched the tone of the day perfectly. Short, sweet, and genuinely intimate. Friends close by, lots of smiles, and the kind of calm energy you only get with smaller guest counts.
If you’re considering the Ballard Locks for your own ceremony, remember that the grounds are public and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The gardens are beautiful, but it is not the same as booking a private venue. For weddings, reserved spaces, chairs, setup, or larger groups, check the current permit and reservation requirements before making plans.
Post-Ceremony Portraits Around the Ballard Locks
After the ceremony, we took advantage of the setting sun and grabbed a few more portraits as the light softened.
This is one of my favorite parts of an intimate wedding day because it’s usually the most relaxed portrait time of the whole day.
Those final portraits ended up being some of the prettiest images of the day.
Wedding Reception at Sabine in Ballard
After portraits, we headed over to Sabine in Ballard for the start of their reception coverage.
Sabine is a beautiful spot, and it worked perfectly for a smaller wedding celebration. The florals and decor were dialed, they had classic cocktails, and the whole space had that warm, polished feel that photographs really well. Sabine Café & Bar is located right on Ballard Ave at 5307 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107, which also makes it a convenient reception option if you’re getting married nearby at the Locks.
They booked me for the start of the reception so I could capture the atmosphere, details, and the beginning of the celebration that would continue into the night.

Planning an intimate wedding at the Ballard Locks?
If you’re planning a wedding at the Ballard Locks, a small ceremony in Seattle, or a reception nearby in Ballard, I’d love to hear what you’re putting together.
I photograph intimate weddings with a mix of candid coverage, clean portraits, and enough direction to keep things moving without turning the day into a photoshoot. A location like the Ballard Locks works especially well when the timeline is simple, the group is manageable, and the day is built around the setting instead of trying to force too much in.
