A relaxed 40-person celebration, golden light through the trees, and a cozy finish at Sabine in Ballard

Hannah and Justin’s wedding day was one of those days that feels effortlessly “Seattle” in the best way. It was intimate, calm, and genuinely fun. About 40 people, no giant production, no stressy energy. Just a couple who wanted a beautiful day, their closest people, and a location that feels like a green oasis right inside the city.

They chose the Ballard Locks (officially the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks) for both their first look and ceremony. If you’ve never been, it’s a lush pocket of gardens and paths tucked along Seattle’s Lake Washington Ship Canal, and it’s famous for being both scenic and surprisingly peaceful for being in the city.

I’m Andre, a Seattle wedding photographer, and this is exactly the kind of day I love photographing. If you’re planning something intimate in Seattle or anywhere in Washington, you can browse my work here:

A super sweet first look in a little outcropping at the Locks

We started the day with a first look in a small tucked-away outcropping area at the Ballard Locks. It was quiet, green, and honestly adorable.

Justin’s reaction was so cute! Full of laughs, full of admiration, and completely locked in on Hannah. This is one of the reasons I always recommend a first look for couples who want a relaxed day. It gives you a calm moment together before guests, before timelines, before everything starts moving.

Right after, we rolled straight into family photos and a few portraits.

Golden sunlight through the trees and that unreal green Seattle backdrop

The light showed up in a big way.

We had sunlight blasting through the trees, creating this golden-green glow that felt soft, warm, and very “Pacific Northwest.” It’s the kind of light that makes portraits feel effortless, even when you’re doing them quickly.

We kept everything simple and natural. Hannah and Justin didn’t want anything overly posed. Their whole vibe was relaxed and easy, so I photographed it that way.

Their ceremony at the Ballard Locks: quick, sweet, and full of close friends

Their ceremony was also at the Locks, and it matched the tone of the day perfectly. Short, sweet, and genuinely intimate. Friends close by, lots of smiles, and the kind of calm energy you only get with smaller guest counts.

If you’re considering the Locks for your own ceremony, it’s worth knowing the grounds are a major Seattle landmark and are managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The gardens are beautiful, but it’s also a public space, so it helps to keep plans flexible and make sure you’ve handled any reservations or permit requirements that apply to your group size and setup.

Portraits after the ceremony

After the ceremony, we took advantage of the setting sun and grabbed a few more portraits as the light softened.

This is one of my favorite parts of an intimate wedding day because it’s usually the most relaxed portrait time of the whole day.

Those final portraits ended up being some of the prettiest images of the day.

Reception details at Sabine in Ballard

After portraits, we headed over to Sabine in Ballard for the start of their reception coverage.

Sabine is a beautiful spot, and it worked perfectly for a smaller wedding celebration. The florals and decor were dialed, they had classic cocktails, and the whole space had that warm, polished feel that photographs really well. Sabine Café & Bar is located right on Ballard Ave at 5307 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107, which also makes it a convenient reception option if you’re getting married nearby at the Locks.

They booked me for the start of the reception so I could capture the atmosphere, details, and the beginning of the celebration that would continue into the night.

Why the Ballard Locks is such a strong choice for intimate weddings in Seattle

If you’re planning a small wedding in Seattle and you want a location that feels like a green escape without leaving the city, the Ballard Locks is hard to beat.

You get:

Lush paths and gardens for portraits

It’s a great fit for couples who want something intimate, beautiful, and straightforward.
