What happens when you mix a half-year of planning, nerves, and one of Washington’s most iconic alpine lakes? You get a proposal story for the books.

Andrew reached out to me about six months before the big day, wanting to plan the perfect proposal for his girlfriend, Paulina. Like most people about to pop the question, he admitted he was nervous—but he also said, again and again, how grateful he was to have someone walking him through the process.

And trust me, this wasn’t just a walk in the park. A proposal at Lake Colchuck means hiking miles uphill with gear, timing everything around light, and making sure the moment unfolds seamlessly. That’s where planning came in.

Planning a Proposal at Lake Colchuck

Colchuck is not an easy hike—it’s steep, rocky, and long. But it’s also one of the most jaw-dropping spots in the entire Pacific Northwest.

To make sure everything went smoothly, Andrew and I pre-scouted possible proposal spots using Google Maps satellite images and trip reports. We found a location tucked away from the main trail, right on the lake’s edge. On proposal day, I made sure to hike up early so I could get in place before the couple arrived.

When I got to the lake, I couldn’t believe it—the spot was completely empty. Not a single soul around. It was like nature cleared the stage just for Andrew and Paulina.

The Nerves Before the Question

On the trail up, I actually passed Andrew and Paulina. This was the first time Andrew and I had ever seen each other in person (outside of exchanged photos), and we both couldn’t help but grin. He later told me he had to make up an excuse for Paulina, because he was so giddy just knowing what was about to happen.

That’s the kind of behind-the-scenes detail that makes a proposal so memorable—it’s not just the big “yes,” but all the little moments that build up to it.

The Proposal

When they reached the spot, Andrew got Paulina into position. He pretended to capture some pictures of her on her Fujifilm camera, while in reality he was getting her into position to pop the question. Once everything was in place, Andrew dropped to one knee.

Paulina’s reaction was priceless—first disbelief, then tears. She even walked a few steps in the opposite direction at first, trying to process what had just happened. Then the emotion took over. Laughter, tears, hugs. Pure, unfiltered joy.

With the jagged peaks of the Enchantment Range rising above them and Colchuck’s turquoise waters sparkling in the background, the entire scene felt surreal.

It was one of those days where everything aligned—the weather, the location, the emotions.

Photos with a View

After the big moment, we took our time capturing portraits around the lake. The granite peaks reflected in the water. The quiet shoreline. Andrew and Paulina embracing, still buzzing from the adrenaline of the proposal.

These weren’t stiff, posed shots. They were natural, full of energy, and framed by one of the most iconic backdrops in Washington State.

Why Colchuck is Perfect for Proposals

As a Seattle proposal photographer, I get asked all the time about the best spots for proposals in Washington. Colchuck is always near the top of my list—for the couples who are adventurous enough to take it on.

The hike isn’t easy, but that’s what makes it special. When you reach the top, it feels like you’ve earned every second of the view. And for Paulina and Andrew, that made the proposal even sweeter.
