There's something undeniably magical about a winter maternity photoshoot—especially when it's set against a snowy landscape like Gold Creek Pond. Nestled in the mountains near Snoqualmie Pass, this location provided the perfect dreamy backdrop for Milena and Tyler’s maternity session.

A Snowy Adventure Maternity Photoshoot

Milena and Tyler made the drive through Snoqualmie Pass to meet me at Gold Creek Pond on a crisp February afternoon. I won’t lie—getting there wasn’t the easiest. My Hyundai Elantra struggled on the icy roads, while their 4Runner handled it like a champ. (Pro tip: AWD or 4WD is a game changer for winter photoshoots!)

Once we arrived, we were greeted by a breathtaking winter wonderland. Snow blanketed the ground, towering evergreens framed the landscape, and the mountains sat in the distance, shrouded in low-hanging clouds. The scene was straight out of a fairytale.

The Dress That Stole the Show (or Should I Say, The Snow...)

One of the most striking elements of this session was Milena’s stunning green dress. The deep emerald hue popped beautifully against the stark white snow, adding a touch of elegance to the rugged outdoors. As a maternity photographer, I always encourage clients to wear bold colors in winter settings—it creates an eye-catching contrast that makes the images even more impactful.

Capturing the Connection

Gold Creek Pond offered plenty of variety for backdrops. We started among the towering trees, where the soft, diffused light made for intimate and cozy moments between the parents-to-be. Then, we moved closer to the pond, which at this point in time is frozen and covered in snow, added an ethereal vive their portraits. Throughout the session, Milena and Tyler embraced the adventure, laughing through the cold and holding each other close to stay warm.

Tips for a Winter Maternity Photoshoot in Washington

If you’re considering a maternity session in the snow, here are a few things to keep in mind:

  1. Dress for the weather: While your outfit should be beautiful, staying warm between shots is key. Bring a coat, gloves, and hand warmers!
  2. Choose the right vehicle: Winter roads can be unpredictable. An AWD or 4WD vehicle makes all the difference when driving to snowy locations like Gold Creek Pond.
  3. Be flexible: Weather in the mountains can change quickly. A cloudy day can add drama to your photos, but it’s always good to have backup dates in case conditions become unsafe.
