If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a photographer in Washington, it’s that the state never ceases to amaze me. No matter how many sessions I do, I’m always finding new ways to fall in love with the landscape. So, when Ron and Rodelyn reached out to plan their engagement session at Artist Point, I knew this would be a shoot to remember. Artist Point is one of those places that feels like you’ve stepped out of reality and into a painting, and even though it was chilly, the love between Ron and Rodelyn kept things warm.

So let’s dive into one of the most fun, visually stunning, and slightly cold engagement sessions I’ve ever had the pleasure of capturing. Spoiler alert: You’re going to fall in love with this spot, just like Ron and Rodelyn did.

Meet Ron and Rodelyn: The Ultimate Adventure Duo

Before I jump into the actual shoot, let me just tell you about Ron and Rodelyn. These two are amazing. Not only are they the sweetest couple you’ll ever meet, but they also have a sense of adventure that made this session truly special. Ron, ever the doting fiancé, was constantly checking in on Rodelyn, keeping her warm during those icy moments (more on that later). Rodelyn, meanwhile, was an absolute rockstar, braving the cold like it was nothing and looking incredible in her stunning pink dress.

I love when couples bring their own unique dynamic to the session, and Ron and Rodelyn’s was full of warmth, laughter, and love. From the minute we started, you could tell these two were totally in sync with each other, and it made the entire shoot so much fun. Their chemistry was off the charts, and capturing it in such a breathtaking location was truly a dream come true.

Starting the Session: Cold But Cozy at Artist Point

Now, let’s talk about Artist Point. If you’ve never been, let me just say that it is a must-see, especially for anyone planning an engagement, wedding, or elopement in Washington. The views are absolutely unreal—like, jaw-droppingly gorgeous. Imagine standing in the middle of a vast landscape where you can see not one, but two iconic mountains: Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan (that’s the one I always forget the name of!).

Even though the weather was chilly (okay, freezing might be more accurate), Ron and Rodelyn were total troopers. We started the session with some cozy shots, with Ron wrapping his arms around Rodelyn to keep her warm. Honestly, the cold just gave them a reason to cuddle up, and the photos from this part of the session are some of my favorites. There’s something about the combination of that icy landscape and their warm connection that just worked so perfectly.

Rodelyn in her flowy pink dress, standing against the rugged backdrop of Artist Point, was a sight to behold. The way the dress popped against the muted tones of the rocks and snow was just chef’s kiss. It added this soft, romantic element that contrasted beautifully with the dramatic landscape around us.

The Views: Out of This World

One of the coolest things about Artist Point is how otherworldly it feels. I’m not exaggerating when I say that parts of it look like the surface of Mars—especially with the way the rocks are scattered across the terrain. Between the unique rock formations and the snow-capped mountains in the background, it was like we were in some kind of sci-fi movie, and Ron and Rodelyn were the stars.

The sky was crystal clear that day, which gave us perfect views of both Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan. And let me tell you, those mountains were showing off. With the sun starting to dip lower in the sky, the light was just perfect. There’s something so magical about photographing a couple with these massive, imposing mountains in the background—it makes the love they share feel even grander in comparison.

And just when I thought things couldn’t get any better, we stumbled upon a small lake formed by the snowmelt. This was a game-changer. The surface of the lake was so still that it created the most beautiful reflection of Ron and Rodelyn. I captured some shots of them standing together, their reflections perfectly mirrored on the water, with the mountains looming in the background. Talk about a picture-perfect moment.

Capturing the Love: Interaction and Authentic Moments

One of the things I love most about photographing couples is capturing their authentic moments of interaction. With Ron and Rodelyn, it was all about the little things—the way Ron would gently pull Rodelyn close to keep her warm, the way they’d look at each other and burst into laughter over some inside joke, the soft kisses and quiet moments when the world seemed to fall away, leaving just the two of them.

One of my favorite parts of this session was the variety we were able to capture. From those intimate, close-up shots of Ron keeping Rodelyn warm to the epic wide-angle shots of them against the vast, Martian-like landscape, there was so much diversity in the images. They were up for anything, whether it was walking along rocky ridges, standing knee-deep in snow (seriously, Rodelyn was a superstar), or just watching the sunset in each other’s arms.

Sunset Magic: A Pink Dress and a Golden Glow

Ah, the sunset. There’s just something about that golden hour glow that makes everything feel a little more magical. As the sun dipped behind the mountains, it cast the most beautiful light across the landscape, and the sky turned this soft shade of pink that perfectly complemented Rodelyn’s dress. It was one of those moments where everything just came together.

We took full advantage of that sunset, snapping some stunning shots of Ron and Rodelyn as they watched the sun disappear behind Mount Baker. The light was soft and golden, casting long shadows across the snow and highlighting the couple in the most romantic way possible. Rodelyn’s pink dress flowed beautifully in the breeze, adding this dreamy, ethereal quality to the photos that still makes me smile when I look back at them.

Why Artist Point is the Perfect Spot for Your Engagement, Wedding, or Elopement

Now, I could go on and on about how amazing Ron and Rodelyn were (and believe me, I will—just wait until their wedding day!), but let’s talk a little about why Artist Point is the perfect location for your own engagement, wedding, or elopement.

First of all, the views. If you’re looking for a place with breathtaking, panoramic views of Washington’s mountains, Artist Point should be at the top of your list. With both Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan in the background, you’re guaranteed to have stunning backdrops for your photos. Plus, the landscape is so varied—you’ve got snow, rocks, wildflowers (in the warmer months), and those gorgeous reflective lakes formed by snowmelt. It’s like having multiple locations all in one spot.

Second, the adventure factor. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just someone who wants to explore a little, Artist Point offers the perfect balance. It’s accessible but still feels remote and wild, making it ideal for couples who want that adventurous vibe without going too far off the beaten path.

Finally, the seasonal beauty. No matter when you plan your session, Artist Point delivers. In the summer, you’ve got wildflower meadows and clear views of the mountains. In the fall, the colors are spectacular. And in the winter (like Ron and Rodelyn’s session), the snow adds this incredible sense of purity and drama to the landscape. It’s beautiful year-round, and each season offers something a little different.
